When I was up at Gaither Studios in Alexandria, Indiana, I was given a CD by the Burchfield Brothers. It is a beautifully recorded project featuring acoustic instruments recorded in the noiseless tradition of Windham Hill records. Naturally, this quickly became one of my favorite projects of all time and it remained in my CD player for quite a few months. More importantly, however, I wanted to meet these marvelous acoustic players and recently have had the priviledge of meeting and hiring one of them. Mark Burchfield is a wonderful acoustic upright bass player. He is the man for tone and style on any country, gospel, or bluegrass project requiring upright. Mark can slap a mean bass line on an electric too whenever that is needed for a hot radio release or more of a pop or rock feel. It is a pleasure to welcome Mark Burchfield to our roster of elite session players.

We are proud to call Aaron our friend, and we are blessed to have him as one of our great session drummers.

Why session players?

Nashville, Tennessee. They don't call it Music City for nothing you know. Nashville has the best players in the nation. Recording studios, record companies, and producers the world over come to Nashville looking for a certain level of musicianship that can be found nowhere else. Publishers, producers, and A&R directors from major labels are used to hearing Nashville's signature sound, and recordings that lack that sound are at a distinct disadvantage. That signature sound is the trademark of Music City's world-class, master session playersthe same players that MasterMix Music has utilized for years to create chart-busting hits for its artists.

Relatively few in number, these master session players appear on nearly every recording project produced in Nashville including almost all singles and album cuts by major artists, especially those played on radio stations nationwide.

It is extremely uncommon for any artist to use his or her own band in the studio. It just doesn't make any sense to do that. There is no way that even a seasoned road band can come anywhere near performing at the level of musicianship of Nashville's finest. Furthermore, when using master players, retakes are rarely needed, thus saving valuable studio time.

When a studio is charging around $1500 per day in addition to producer and engineer's fees, it makes perfect sense to use professional session players. This is for two reasons: 1. The end result is much better and carries the authentic Nashville Sound that publishers and A&R staffers are listening for, and 2. the session will go smoother and quicker, costing less than doing retake after retake.

It is quite common to produce rhythm tracks for a 10-song project in one day using true session players, something that cannot be accomplished otherwise. Because of that, we can get our artists into the studio sooner to begin work on their vocal tracks. After that, we bring in all the guitars and fiddles, or whatever else is deemed necessary by the artist and his or her producer, for overdubs. Then the project goes into its final mixing and mastering stages before ultimately being sent out for manufacturing. The whole process is improved, hastened, and less costly by choosing to use Nashville session players.
